The Transport Minister might be open to bringing forward a second Mount Victoria tunnel in the capital, but Associate Minister Julie Anne Genter clearly isn't.

Minister Phil Twyford has said he's open to discussing the timeline of Let's Get Wellington Moving projects, once business cases are done.

But Genter wouldn't budge when questioned by Heather Du Plessis-Allan despite the new mayor's calls to build the tunnel ahead of rapid transit to the airport.

"What we're focused on is delivering rapid transport for Wellington, and that's going to make the biggest difference to the efficiency of transport around the city, the livability of the city. That's what Wellingtonians want, they want a solution that works."

She says their decisions are always informed by the evidence.

"Being a transport planner, I'm pretty confident that what's going to deliver the best outcome for Wellington is sustainable investment and prioritisation of public transport and rapid transit. That's what we have to do for the climate, that's going to be better for congestion."
