Corbel Construction enters liquidation

Buildings have been left unfinished and workers without jobs as another construction company falls over.

This time, Christchurch based Corbel Construction's gone into liquidation leaving 14 projects incomplete.

In the last year, the company had $35 million worth of projects underway in Auckland alone.

This comes after Fletcher building's construction division reported losing nearly $1 billion earlier this year, followed by the collapse of Ebert construction.

Leading property and construction lawyer Jeff Walters told Larry Williams that many of these companies are over-stretched.

“There is an issue of not enough resources and not monitoring the sites properly.”

He says that there has been a history of undercutting, but also low margins throughout the industry.

Walters says there is a lot of things that aren’t under their control because they don’t have the resources.

“To a certain extent, it should be within their control, but they’re finding it isn’t under their control. In some cases, they are taking risks that aren’t under their control.”

He says some companies have got too big, too fast.
