US correspondent: Election result could divide US even further

What the US election is proving so far is that America is still very much divided.

It's still a close race, and final results aren't expected in for a couple of days, with key states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania unlikely to start counting mail voting until tomorrow.

What the result has shown is that neither candidate has been given a significant majority.

NBC reporter Howard Fineman told Heather du Plessis-Allan this election won't unify America.

"Trump's people are passionate, Biden's people are slightly less passionate but they are very passionate in their hatred of Donald Trump."

The election result will be a statement only of the deep divisions in the US, rather than a statement for or against Trump or Biden.

He says that it could take a couple of days or more to know the results. Fineman says that officials says that Philadelphia, a major urban centre in Pennsylvania, will not be counting mail-in votes.

Fineman says that the Democrats expected Trump to be ahead before mail-in ballots were counted.

"That's just symbolic of the way things are turning out."
