The Government is defending it's actions around the recent lockdowns.

Auckland plunged into Alert Level Three on Sunday morning, after it was revealed a 21 year old man had tested positive and visited a number of locations while infectious.

The move follows the three day lockdown a fortnight ago.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson told Heather Du Plessis Allan they operate on the advice they get from health officials.

"We still have somebody who was potentially infectious for about a week in the Auckland community, who visited a large number of locations.

"We felt this was the right action to take in these circumstances.
