Is MMP on the way out this election?
Speaking with Mike Hosking this morning, ACT leader David Seymour predicted not only the demise of New Zealand First and the Greens, but also his own party.
“In five elections time, probably the Greens will be gone, ACT will make it for the next few elections but probably not forever, and we will be back to two parties.”
Massey University Associate Professor of Politics Grant Duncan says that Seymour is on to something.
He told Heather du Plessis-Allan the stats are backing him up, as we've gone down from eight parties to just five in this newest government.
Duncan says that a number of factors are in play.
"There's not a fault with the system as such, because this hasn't happened in Germany, which has the same system.
"It does reflect on the way in which the TV presents the leaders debate."
He says that the debates make it look like it is just a battle between National and Labour, making it appear to be a presidential layout similar to the US, which is unfair on the minor parties.
