Brownlee: New Zealand citizen detained in Turkey responsible for herself

National says the Australia-New Zealand dual citizen detained in Turkey should be responsible for herself.

The 26-year-old woman - who Turkish officials are calling a terrorist - held New Zealand and Australian citizenship but Australia has revoked theirs.

Jacinda Ardern is not happy the woman's Australian citizenship has been unilaterally revoked, making her and her two children in New Zealand's problem.

Ardern says if the shoe was on the other foot, New Zealand would take responsibility, which would be the right thing to do.

But Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison has made no apologies, saying his job is representing Australia's interests.

National's Foreign Affairs spokesperson Gerry Brownlee told Heather du Plessis-Allan it was well publicised years ago if you were going off to join ISIS, there would be consequences.

"Why there is suddenly a sort of political stoush about who is responsible here is I think a bit of a mute point."

He says we should just leave it to Turkish justice system to deal with her.

Brownlee says that New Zealand has washed its hands off Mark Taylor, New Zealand's most notorious ISIS fighter - but he admits complicates matters.

"Exactly what their status would be is something that should be clarified for a start."

On the matter of Ardern's comments, Brownlee does not imagine our Prime Minister can change Morrison's mind, and she should keep in mind how important the trans-Tasman relationship.

"You'd have to go back to Muldoon when the skirmishes between Australia and New Zealand were as frequent as they seem to be at the moment."
