Dr Ian Town: At-risk groups should get boosted sooner

The Health Ministry's urging at-risk groups to take the chance to get Covid boosters sooner.  

The interval between the second Pfizer vaccine and third dose is now three months, from Friday – instead of four months.  

Evidence shows boosters reduce Omicron infections and severity. 

Ministry science advisor Dr Ian Town told Heather du Plessis-Allan its important older people get boosted – because their antibody levels fall faster than young people's.  

Town says Māori and Pasifika should also be coming forward as quickly as possible. 

“The other thing, of course, that we want to be aware of is that we do have a number of people in the community with underlying medical conditions, they would also be a priority.”
