A film with a major plot point revolving around suicide, has been ordered to start putting warnings on its advertising.

The Chief Censor says the new re-make of "A Star is Born" must include a plot warning for suicide.

Chief Censor David Shanks says he received a number of complaints.

"This topic is handled relatively well in this film, but it is still a strongly impactful scenes for viewers, particularly those who might be vulnerable."

Shanks says that he has not yet seen the movie, but two senior advisers have.

He says that ratings give viewers an opportunity to make a choice about whether or not they want to see the content in the film.

"I don't think it can be anymore detrimental than going in and seeing the scene itself."

Shanks says there are means for them to get clear classifications in place for streaming services.
