The Motor Industry Association has withdrawn its support for the Government’s Clean Car Standard.
They say they want to support policies to reduce CO2 emissions but the bill is poorly designed and will be impossible for the industry to meet.
It also says the bill will maybe push up new car prices by 15 to 20 percent.
Motor Industry Association CEO David Crawford told Heather du Plessis-Allan the targets for 2026 and 2027 are ahead of Europe’s goals.
“Between now and 2027, that’s a phenomenal drop in CO2 emissions in our fleets and being able to get the vehicles is a challenge.”
Crawford said the 2026 and 2027 targets are very steep and impossible to reach and they were consulted on the targets up to 2025.
