Gull petrol is keeping a close eye on fuel prices in Wellington when they open there in the next 18 months.
GM Dave Bodger says other companies often drop prices when Gull opens up nearby.
This comes amid public anger over fuel prices, with questions raised over companies' margins.
The Government's changing the law so the Commerce Commission can look into them more closely.
He's hopeful of a first Wellington Gull next year.
"When that was talked about last week, there was a lot of excitement in the capital. There is a lot less competition down in the Wellington zone. Our business is trying to change that."
Bodger says his stations are on average 19 cents lower than the national fuel price.
"We see it when we open in a new suburb or a new town. We go in and all of a sudden the prices come down to a level where we've opened at. And hey, we're happy in that new suburb and that new town selling at our prices and making money."
Bodger is reminding people fuel companies aren't donors, that they're in it to make money.
He says good, strong competition is the key to reasonable prices, but the rest is due to things out of their control.
