Even cycling advocates don't believe the government's new cycle bridge over the harbour is worth the money and can be delivered on time.

On Friday, Transport Minister Michael Wood announced an $800 million bridge that will run alongside the Auckland Harbour Bridge, but cancelled long-planned for projects like Mill Road.

Christine Rose, chair of the Movement Group, told Heather du Plessis-Allan New Zealanders have every right to be mad.

"People are rightfully saying we could nurses with this, we could fund hospital beds, we could do a lot of progress on the national cycling network with that sort of money that would bring a whole lot of benefit."

She says they are quite doubtful about the need of expensive infrastructure - they should just open up a lane on the bridge.

"That would be a hell of a lot cheaper."
