A marketing campaign has flushed the number of fatbergs in Tauranga.
Fatbergs are created when items like wet wipes bind with fat in the sewer causing blockages and wastewater overflows.
Tauranga City Council's Cathy Davidson told Andrew Dickens local Communications agency Wave developed an animated elephant singing a song - which went viral on social media.
She says if people became more aware of what went down the toilet - they'd stop flushing other unwanted items.
"Over that four month period of our campaign running we did have a 40 per cent reduction in blockages, so we could see that we were really having an impact."
