Weather bomb set to dampen start of school holidays

The Antarctic blast heading this way is being billed by weather forecasters as a one-in-10 year storm.

From tomorrow evening the weather bomb should bring to the South Island wind, rain - and heavy snow in some areas.

Most of the country will feel the wrath of the deep low's strong winds and falling temperatures as it progresses north.

MetService weather adviser Cameron Coutts told Heather du Plessis-Allan says the south will be hardest hit.

"The snow comes in late Sunday into Monday morning, and this is right down to sea level in Southland. In fact, it's the lowest we've forecast this winter."

There are hopes the storm won't put people off from travelling around the country.

The country's traditional holiday hotspots are preparing for an influx of domestic visitors these school holidays.

Though, even if the weather does hit, the Coromandel's fared well financially through Covid-19, thanks to domestic tourism.

Thames-Coromandel District Mayor Sandra Goudie says the district's fortunate to have moved through the pandemic better than most.

She told Heather du Plessis-Allan it helps the district is in the middle of the Auckland-Waikato-Tauranga golden triangle.

"There's a huge population of those three major centres, so we still get a strong visitor attendance."
