When it comes to what you pay for parking, Wellington is set to become more expensive than some of the biggest cities in the world.

The council wants to increase inner city parking to $5 an hour – compared to $3.50 in Christchurch, $4 in Dunedin, while in Hamilton you can even park for free for the first two hours.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster told Heather du Plessis-Allan it is one of a number of things proposed for the council's Long Term Plan, and the $5 parking is something he has less of a problem with than other proposals.

He says they want people to submit proposals whether they are for or against.

"If someone can make a really good argument to say something can't work for a specific reason, we want to hear it."

He says a number of parks will be removed under Let's Get Wellington Moving, but they may find replacements for those parks.
