Asparagus growers are having a hard time of late.
With restaurants closed, slow supermarket sales and exporting practically non-existent, growers are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Managing director of Boyds Asparagus Andrew Keaney told Heather du Plessis-Allan there are a lot more issues than Covid that's affecting this.
"Rising costs is significant. Growing and harvesting asparagus is extremely labour intensive. Freight costs are increasing, packaging costs are increasing, cost of land is relatively expensive in New Zealand and over probably the last 10 to 15 years, we've sort of become uncompetitive on the global market."
