Police are going to start trialling a new tactical response model in a bid to keep officers safe at work.
Teams will remain generally unarmed, but will have immediate access to firearms if the situation requires it.
The trial will run in various parts of the North Island - including Auckland, Northland and Waikato.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster told Heather du Plessis-Allan the scheme has had positive feedback.
“We’ve done a lot of engagement with our own people and across the wider community and we’ve had pretty wide-ranging support for the model.”
