Huawei is hopeful that they have a chance of building New Zealand's 5G network.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's agreed to give the Chinese telco a limited role - but has excluded it from sensitive core infrastructure.

Huawei New Zealand deputy managing director Andrew Bowater says great things can be achieved when a Government works collaboratively with an industry.

"We're hopeful that we'll be able to go down this little line , cause we hope that New Zealand will be able to get the best possible 5G network and we know we've got the best product out there, and we'd like to roll that out here."

The US fears Beijing could use the company's equipment to steal secrets from the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand -- who are a part of the Five Eyes.

Spark has previously applied to use Huawei as a single vender for its New Zealand 5G network -- but withdrew the application last November.
