National Shadow Treasurer: We have enough rainy day fund money to pay for a three week lockdown

Last July Covid Response and Recovery Fund or “rainy day fund” as Grant Robertson used to call it, was $14 billion big.

It was set aside in the event of a second Covid wave and not for "any old project in the never-never".

Now Grant Robertson run down the Covid fund to fund Labour's projects to the point where the $14 billion rainy day fund is now only $5 billion

National's Shadow Treasurer Andrew Bayly says it’s worse than imagined and they should have kept more money aside for an eventuality of another outbreak, especially with the Delta variant of Covid.

“If we were to have a national outbreak of the nasty Delta virus that we seemed to have escaped in Wellington, we would only have enough money in the till to pay for a three and a half week national lockdown.”
