Greater Wellington Regional Council has defended spending $6,000 on a crayfish costume an actor to wear it.

Frank the Crayfish stars in ads warning against burning treated wood in a campaign that has cost $26,000 all up.

The Taxpayer's Union says that the campaign could cost nearly $67,000 by the end of its run.

General Manager of environment management Alistair Cross told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's designed to get people looking.

"We're using this campaign, it's quite quirky and quite out there, to connect with our communities about things that really matter in the environment and differences that we all can make, starting small and thinking big."
