Road safety measures don't often become a tourist hot spot but a sunflower field is bucking that trend.

47-thousand sunflowers have been planted in about half a hectare in the Wairarapa, south of Pahiatua.

It's designed to catch motorists' eyes – and slow them down.

The plan's worked – with travellers stopping for a photo op.

Gardener Abbe Hoare told Heather Du-Plessis Allan overall, it's had a positive outcome.

“The other problem, I suppose, is that it’s brought so many more people to the area, so that’s a whole other thing, but I think the people that use the road the most often are definitely slowing down to have a look.”
