Tim Dower: How much longer will we have lockdowns for?

It feels like we're in a kind of Covid no-man's land right now, it's not the imminent threat it was a year ago, but it's not over yet, either.

On the one hand, looking at the restrictions on Wellington and huge impact they've had, you might think it's overkill.

After all, we've got no evidence yet of anyone getting infected by the visitor from Sydney.

On the other, we're being told we need a couple more days of no community spread before we can relax again.

This must be incredibly frustrating for people who've planned big events, and for businesses.

It's especially hard on hospitality, where they've had to limit numbers and go to table service and all the rest of it.

At the same time I look across the ditch at what's happening in New South Wales and I think jeepers, the outbreak over there could really take off.

And if it does, we'll be proved right in extending the suspension of the travel bubble.

The big question for me is; how much longer can we go on like this?

Do you imagine us limping from alert level to alert level in a year from now, what about two years?

It's just not pragmatic to slam the doors down every time there's a bit of a fright.

And we're a long, long way from vaccinating our way out of danger.

Just over a million shots delivered in total, only 8 percent of the population fully vaccinated, and the Health Minister admitting he's having sleepless nights about the vaccine supply.

It's easy to criticise, and when it's justified I think we should.

But perhaps it's time now to start thinking about how we're going to live with Covid in the long term?

Even when everyone in New Zealand who wants the jab has had it, we won't be immune from outbreaks here and there.

So what's needed is some serious thinking about how we're going to live, and how we're going to earn our way, in a very different new world.

Some experts say this is going to last another 3 years, or more, the truth is we're all guessing.

What we need is to accept things will never be pre-Covid again.
