Rachel Smalley: Clinton's there on political merit, Trump's there because he could fund a campaign

Over the course of the last year, I have championed Hillary Clinton for the U.S presidency, and that’s for a number of reasons -- but chiefly it's because of her experience,

She is not perfect. There have been scandals. Corruption allegation after corruption allegation has been leveled at the Clinton family, and the Clinton Foundation. She has screwed up. She is flawed. Of that there is no doubt.

But her flaws don’t threaten the world that I live in. And they don't threaten the world my child is growing up in.

Clinton has a brilliant knowledge of government, of international diplomacy, of the crisis’ threatening the world – and there are many – war, climate change, the rise of Russia, the refugee catastrophe, ISIS, inequality, trade, judicial injustice – and so it goes on. Clinton is where she is on political merit.

Trump is not.

Trump is there because he’s a very wealthy man who could fund an extraordinary campaign to promote himself for the Republican nomination. And he did so without the backing of many of the Republican faithful.

He’s a great self-promoter. Brilliant, in fact. But should he take over the mantle of the most powerful person on the planet?

Even if you put to one side that he's the most ill-prepared presidential candidate in history, on character alone, surely he cannot become the president elect.

He's a bigot. A racist. He fuels xenophobia. His attitudes to women – that he believes power and wealth place him above common decency, above the law, that he can grope a woman because of who he is -- that's frightening in itself. He talked about 'grabbing women by the pussy'....And the sexual harassment allegations and the women who accuse him of inappropriate behaviour keep coming forward.

The fact he's a champion of beauty contests. His suggestion Fox host Megyn Kelly had her period when she interviewed him because it was a tough interview, and then he called her a bimbo. He called comedian Rosie O'Donnell a slob and a pig. He's made highly offensive comments about Muslims, Mexicans, The disabled. He's suggested women should be punished for having an abortion.

And he keeps rolling out that line “make America great again”. What he really means is “make America white again.”

He is a dangerous man and a vote for him will not just set America on an unknown path. But the world too.

America, you’ve had your fun. Yes, it was amusing at first, and then slightly alarming when Trump won the nomination. But this is serious now.

There can only be one president. And she's not a crotch-grabber.
