There are fears it will take a death before action is taken on the speed limits in place around schools.
The Government is being lobbied to implement a 40 kilometre speed limit around schools, nationwide.
Lake Rerewhakaaitu School pupils asked the council to reduce the speed limit in front of their school from 70 kilometres per hour to 40 during school hours.
School principal Rick Whalley told Mike Yardley the kids investigated how fast cars were travelling outside the school and found some were going too fast.Â
"We put signs out and between 9am and midday, 115 vehicles drove past, one clocking 95 kilometres per hour, and about a third were trucks."
