Today marks 40 years since the Erebus tragedy.
Commemoration services are taking place in Auckland to mark the tragedy, which killed all 257 people on board.
A service is planned at the Auckland Airport Erebus Crew Memorial Gardens this afternoon, and private ceremony is also being held at Government House.
Head of the Erebus National Memorial Group, Richard Waugh, told Kate Hawkesby the crash was a turning point.
He says the lessons that were learnt from the accident from 1979 have helped airlines fly more safely today, and today's anniversary will be a precious day for many people.
"The Erebus families have been neglected for a long time and it has become apparent that a national memorial is desperately needed."
