It's time to act with pace in improving our students' maths results.

The Ministry of Education's called in a Royal Society of New Zealand panel to shake up how maths is taught, and the way teachers are trained and supported.

The ministry's National Monitoring Survey found only 45 per cent of Year 8 students are achieving above or at the expected curriculum level.

Principals Federation president Perry Rush told Kate Hawkesby he hopes the panel looks at specificity in the curriculum and national leadership.

Rush says they see a significant drop somewhere between Year 2 and Year 8.

He says that's what they need to analyse, and get action plan on quickly.
