Balance is key for a free app aimed at helping parents manage their child's health.

The Well Child app, developed in Nelson, sends reminders for your child's vaccinations and check ups, along with targeted and personalised health and wellness information.

An updated version of the app, which has just been released, has new graphing capabilities which are easier to log and read and follow your child's health progress.

Project Manager and Nelson midwife Kelly Mahuika told Tim Wilson it's important they strike the right balance with helpful alerts, without being intrusive.

"As a parent and as a smartphone user it's annoying and people will be more likely to sort of delete the app if we abuse that, so what we are trying to do is create engagement."
