Trade Me has been given a tick of endorsement by the Privacy Commission.

It now has the Privacy Trust Mark, along with Real Me, which people use to prove who they are online to Government agencies.

Trade Me head of trust and safety, Jon Duffy, told Kate Hawkesby the company is straight up about the fact it releases information to law enforcement agencies.

"The biggest agency we release information to is police and we report on the trends, the types of data that is going and the types of issues that we are looking to help police with."

Duffy says the team at Trade Me are pleasantly surprised and it wasn't something they were expecting.

"It's just a nice acknowledgement that we are doing something that is kind of furthering the development of privacy culture in New Zealand."
