Joe Biden seen as favourite in crowded Democratic field

More than a dozen Democrats have already launched their formal 2020 presidential campaigns.

After former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke's entered the race last week, Biden, who is his party's best-known and best-connected presidential prospect, is the last major contender to remain on the sidelines.

Democratic pollster John Zogby told Kate Hawkesby the crowded field of Democrats is being led by a man who hasn't officially announced his intention of running for the presidency.

"Early polling has Joe Biden, the former Vice-President, ahead of President Donald Trump. The rest are either tied or slightly behind. Believe it or not, the President is not in bad shape running against the Democrats candidates, except for Biden."

Zogby says although Joe Biden will bring plenty of experience and a large supporter base, he will struggle against an unpredictable and combative President Donald Trump, who relishes the chance to get into verbal confrontations.

"Biden is the best-known candidate of all, he is giving off major hints of an official announcement any time soon. He is definitely the frontrunner, but he will have to go through many hoops to beat the current President."

With poll numbers staying steady for Trump, Zogby says the President is solely focusing on keeping his base which elected him in 2019 and is making no efforts to branch out.

"This is a President who has made no efforts to build his base. He has a hardcore, middle-class white supporter base and its reflecting in his polling numbers, they are solid with him. He hasn't reached out to the other side at all."
