New guidelines for school uniforms are being praised as a step in the right direction .
The Human Rights Commission has released non-binding standards, to help schools align their policies with the Bill of Rights.
It includes consistency with the Treaty of Waitangi and consideration of non-gendered uniforms.
Otago University public health researcher Johanna Reidy told Kate Hawkesby treating everyone the same, isn’t treating everyone fairly.
She says these guidelines help create uniforms that are inclusive and flexible.
