A group of UK academics says we should be focusing more on driving less, than on a push to bring in electric vehicles.
The government wants to cut the price of importing electric and hybrid cars, while hiking the fee for high emitting vehicles.
The Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions says electric cars could increase vehicle use, leading to more congestion.
Professor Jillian Anable told Andrew Dickens we can't rely on new technology to solve all transport sector problems.
“We are talking about deep cuts in carbon emissions over the next decade. What that means is we can’t put any more cement or tarmac into our system and we can’t build anymore infrastructure.”
Anable says it will take 15 or more years for New Zealand to swap out all of its old cars and bring in the new.
She says there needs to be a focus on reducing the usage of cars completely.
