How genome sequencing can help track Covid outbreak

New Zealanders are suddenly caught up by the practice of genome sequencing.

It's the way scientists are aiming to find out where our confirmed cases of community transmission started.

Dr Bloomfield at today’s press conference told media that they have found links to cases in the UK and Australia.

Jemma Geoghegan, an expert in genome sequencing from Otago University’s microbiology department, told Kate Hawkesby that sequencing itself takes around six hours 

"But then the problem is that the analysis can take a bit of time. We hope within 24 hours of receiving a sample we hope to understand more about the sample."
