The Government's being urged to take the handbrake off at the border.

Auckland Airport's announced its international terminal is being split into two zones in anticipation of a Cook Islands bubble.

Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown airports are all ready to go, pending government approval.

Aviation commentator Irene King told Kate Hawkesby she's stunned six months down the track we're only now putting in place the solution.

“I’m not suggesting there aren't risks at the border, but you must allow commerce to get on with commerce.”

King says Auckland Airport had to put infrastructure in because its configuration is different.

“This is the airport telling the Government we are good to go, and stop micromanaging the border, because we have the solution in place.”
