Large aftershocks are continuing.

Duty seismologist Dr Anna Kaiser told Bruce Russell at this stage it's too early to say how long they will continue.

"Our analysts are still reviewing all these quakes - it's a bit of a jumbled mess when you look at the seismograph, you've got quakes coming in all the time."

Dr Kaiser told Bruce Russell people need to be well aware the aftershocks will continue.

"Typically we get a flurry very early on, and then they'll become less frequent going forward."

"Also with an earthquake this size we can never rule out another earthquake of a similar size."

Debunking a theory that has been circulated, Dr Kaiser said there's been no demonstrated link between large earthquakes like these and the moon - and it would be drawing too much of a conclusion to say the quakes are related to the current super moon.
