A school based programme will see 180,000 young people get schooled up on consent and healthy relationships.

ACC is pouring just over $18 million dollars in to the 'Mates and Dates' programme to roll it out in secondary schools nationwide.

It follows the so called roast-busters scandal.

The programme teaches students to have respectful attitudes towards sex, instead of just the mechanics of it.

Sexual Abuse Prevention Network general manager Fiona McNamara told Kate Hawkesby it can make a big difference.

"Getting good quality sexuality education out there for young people is a really important part of reducing the incidents of sexual violence, it is really important to educate people around what a healthy relationship actually looks like."

McNamara says it's also important to teach people the warning signs of abuse.
