Sexual abuse survivor advocates say it's important to take all allegations seriously as real victims seldom lie.

The reminder comes as an Auckland teacher of 40 years is acquitted of indecent assault charges, after three schoolgirls reveal they made it up to get him fired.

However, Sexual Abuse Prevention Network general manager, Fiona McNamara told Kate Hawkesby it's an isolated case.

"It's incredibly rare. I don't have the exact numbers on it, but it's one of the lowest false reported crimes."

She says that the teacher involved in the case will need victim support.

McNamara says what kind of support he needs from here on, is up to him.

"There will be counselling services and support people who will be really skilled in working with someone who's been through such a terrible thing."
