A road safety campaigner says nearly doubling the fine for using a phone while driving, isn't enough.
From the end of the month, the penalty will increase from $80 to $150 dollars.
40,000 infringement notices were issued last year.
Clive Matthew-Wilson told Kate Hawkesby offenders should have their phones taken off them.
He says police already have the power to seize your car, so why not the phone as well.
"If you don't get the message, the police should seize your cell phone, number and car for a week."
