Cook Islands travel bubble expected to be more popular than trans-Tasman

A travel bubble will open between the Cook Islands and New Zealand on May 17.

Travel Agents' Association president Brent Thomas says travel to Australia is still largely about visiting family at the moment.

But he told Kate Hawkesby he thinks Kiwis will quickly start holidaying in the Cook Islands.

"The Cook Islands is a perennial favourite of New Zealanders to head away from the winter, and as we head into the colder months now, we'll certainly see those bookings."

He says it's expected to be more popular than the trans Tasman bubble at first, because most people are going to Australia to see family - not holiday.

"Probably by the end of this month we'll be seeing bookings coming through for the holiday market."

Thomas says Australia holidays will become more popular when more people have trust in the bubble - and people want to go to warm places in cold months.
