Economists warn a strong bounce back in the economy won't last through summer.
The economy performed above expectations in the September quarter, with spending up in Tasman and Northland, but down in the main centres.
Infometrics senior economist Brad Olsen told Kate Hawkesby the boost from domestic tourism hasn't been enough to make up for borders closed to tourism.
"We aren't out of the woods yet and there's still more pain to come."
Mr Olsen says the regions which did well had fewer ties to international tourism, and had agriculture to rely on.
