The government's plan to end mixed use motels in Rotorua is being welcomed by a housing advocate.
Mixed-use motels were being used as emergency housing, but there had been problems with gang members and drug use.
The government will now place families in particular motels separate from other groups.
They will also provide support services for those in emergency housing, with a hub where people can go to access support.
Monte Cecilia Housing Trust Chief Executive Bernie Smith told Kate Hawkesby homelessness is a problem across the country.
“It’s happening in Taupo, it’s happening in Hastings, Napier it’s happening in Auckland, right across New Zealand. So this should be an example of what the government needs to do right across the country.”
