A Taranaki business is hoping to stop millions of dollars worth of meat going to waste.

Independent butchers aren't allowed to open during the lockdown, meaning their stock could be headed for the landfill.

Ash Peters from Texas BBQ Foods told Kate Hawkesby he's hoping it can be delivered to his factory before it spoils.

"We would then smoke it, cook it, pack it, and ship it out to food bags, soup kitchens, and areas of New Zealand where it's truly needed."

Peters says he'd do it all for nothing.
