Fingers crossed for New Zealand's first student satellite.

The satellite, designed and built by Auckland university students, is being launched today.

It aims to better understand earthquakes by measuring electrical activity in the Earth's atmosphere.

Aryan Lobie says his team are hopeful the flight will be successful.

"The intention is definitely for it to work, but given that it is the first satellite...

"I think half of satellites fail before they get to the rocket."
