We've got some new flag designs to think about. I've got to be honest, I'm like a leaf in the breeze on this. There's part of me that says I don't really care so much. But there's another part somewhere in my chest that says this is actually really important stuff.
Changing the flag isn't like picking a new leader for the Labour Party. You can't be throwing out the old one every year or so to switch to something a little more fashionable. If we do change the flag, we'll be stuck with the new one for 20, maybe 50, perhaps 100 years. It could be John Key's greatest legacy. Decisions like this shouldn't be rushed.
You'll hear a lot of people saying it's almost blasphemous to talk about changing the flag when people fought and died for the current one. Actually I don't know of anyone actually fighting over a flag per se, except maybe in The Warehouse just before the Rugby World Cup. People have fought under the flag, but what they actually fought for was the country - New Zealand's proud principles and standards, our way of life. So that in itself is not a reason to stick with what we have. The flag can change but what it stands for doesn't have to.
The best argument for change in my mind is to have something which clearly represents what we are today, and we could argue forever what that is. Are we just about sport? Are we more about beautiful countryside? Should we have a big cow on the flag?
You'll hear people saying the current flag isn't distinct from Australia's. Fair enough, it's not. Maybe they should change if that's all it's about.
So it's appropriate we have a debate, consider all the angles, look at what's on offer, and made an careful and informed choice. Or maybe, we should just leave well alone.
