What used to be secret undiscovered walking spots are being exposed thanks to social media.
But it's having a negative impact on land owners, who say too many tourists are tramping through their properties.
New Zealand Walking Access Commission chief executive Eric Pyle told Kate Hawkesby while some areas saw around 30,000 visitors a few years ago - it's now more than triple that.
"So they're very, very big numbers and probably 10-15 years ago it may have been just a few thousand so the growth is large."
A Walking Access Commission report is now open for submissions.
It focuses on walking access in the South Island high country.
