A drone has held up air traffic over Auckland Airport.

Newstalk ZB's Kerre McIvor was on a flight from Wellington, about to land, when the drone was spotted.

McIvor says "everybody had to go in to a holding pattern, and the pilot said we might have to be transferred to another runway.

"Ultimately air traffic control came through and said we could land, only 15-20 minutes late."

Kerre McIvor says she was sitting next to former National MP Steven Joyce, whose suggestion was that someone should shoot the drone out of the sky.

Earlier this month a drone at the airport delayed and diverted 20 flights.
