A woman has been fined AU$83,000 ($90,000) after she chopped down two of her neighbour's trees.

Yueling Liu was fed up with leaves from her neighbour's tree landing in her swimming pool.

So the Sydney woman took matters into her own hands, hiring a contractor to cut down the native 15m-tall cheese trees.

When the neighbour returned home, they were greeted by two little stumps and no trees.

As well as complaining about leaves falling into her pool, Liu also told council workers that the trees, which had a canopy of five metres, were sparking during storms.

"I wanted to remove the tree and branches because it was dropping leaves into my pool," Liu said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to the council, it's not the first time Liu has attempted to remove the trees, after previously contacting them inquiring about removal.

Liu was fined NZ$52,000 and ordered to pay NZ$38,000 in council costs.

She also had to plant two cheese trees on her own property.

In May, another Sydney resident was fined NZ$81,000 for illegally cutting down trees.

Michael Carter went behind the council's back and hacked down 13 trees, three of which died.

He pleaded guilty and was ordered to attend a bush regeneration course.
