UPDATED 10.25am: Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been found guilty on all counts relating to the 2013 attack.

The jury deliberated across two days before returning their verdicts on the 30 charges he faced.

Seventeen of the charges the 21-year-old faced carried a possible death penalty sentence.

The death penalty is not a possible sentence in the state of Massachusetts, but because his case is being tried at a federal level it is an option.

After the verdicts were delivered Judge George O’Toole told the court there is no date set for sentencing yet, but it may be next week.

A "death-qualified" jury of seven women and five men was selected for the trial. The phrase “death-qualified” refers to the vetting process used to ensure jurors are comfortable and able to impose such a sentence if it is warranted.

Tsarnaev’s lawyer Judy Clarke has been a staunch campaigner against the death penalty.

Among the high profile mass-murderers she has had commuted to a life prison sentence are Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, who wanted to be put to death, Jared Lee Loughner, who opened fire in an Arizona parking lot killing six and seriously wounding state representative Gabrielle Giffords and September 11 suspect Zacarias Moussaoui.

She spoke briefly with Tsarnaev after this morning's verdicts were announced before he was returned to custody.

Reporters inside the courtroom described the bomber’s behaviour as muted as the verdicts were announced.

Victims of the bombing have spoken out to thank the jury for their verdict.

"Today's verdict will never replace the lives that were lost and so dramatically changed, but it is a relief, and one step closer to closure,” said Jeffrey Baumann, who lost both his legs in the bombing.

"Guilty like we all knew he would be. Great Jurors," said Sydney Corcoran.

Harre hopes for no death penalty

Laila Harre believes guilty verdicts for the Boston Bomber were inevitable.

The former MP crossed the finish line of the Boston Marathon just 10 minutes before the bombs went off in 2013.

The second part of his trial starts next week when both sides will present evidence for and against his execution.

Harre can't see how sending Tsarnaev to his death would help heal Boston.

She hopes and prays the jury doesn't impose the death penalty.

Massachusetts governor reaffirms hatred

During his election campaign in 2014, Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker said Tsarnaev is the man he despises most – and he stood by that statement today.

"To this day I continue to be amazed that somebody could stand there for four minutes in front of Martin Richard and place that device right next to him."

Gov. Baker repeated his belief the 21-year-old should receive the death sentence, but added he doesn’t want to see the state reintroduce the death penalty which it scrapped in 1984.
