United States President Donald Trump has claimed that diet soft drinks could potentially eliminate cancer cells, according to Dr Mehmet Oz.

Oz, who heads the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services, made the comments on Donald Trump jnr’s podcast, Triggered.

“Then come the diet soda pops, which your dad argues are good for him because they kill grass [when] poured on it, so therefore they must kill cancer cells inside the body,” the doctor said on the podcast.

Oz said Trump often makes a point of displaying his stash of sweets and can press a red button in the Oval Office to have a diet soft drink brought in during meetings.

Diet soft drinks are generally regarded by the medical community as unhealthy, according to Healthline, with some studies linking them to weight gain and insulin resistance, factors that can contribute to type two diabetes.

Robert F. Kennedy jnr and Oz have been leading figures in the Make America Healthy Again movement, encouraging Americans to avoid processed foods and improve their dietary habits.

However, their efforts to persuade the US President to change his own diet have not been successful, according to the New York Post.

Oz said Trump also has a soft spot for Fanta.

“We were on Air Force One the other day, and I walked in because he wanted to talk about something, and he had an orange soft drink on his desk,” Oz said.

“I said, ‘Are you kidding me?’

Trump started to sheepishly grin, Oz said.

“He goes, ‘You know, this stuff is good for me – it kills cancer cells.’

“And then he tells me, ‘It’s fresh squeezed, so how bad could it be for you?’”

Oz and Trump jnr then agreed that the US President was “in perfect health”.

Trump is well-known for his love of fast food.

This week, he had McDonald’s delivered to the White House, highlighting his “no tax on tips” policy.

Trump stopped into a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania to try his hand as an employee at the restaurant while he campaigned in 2024.

“I’m looking for a job,” Trump told the owner of the McDonald’s, according to CNN.

“And I’ve always wanted to work at McDonald’s.”
