Lives and homes could be in danger from an out-of-control and unpredictable bushfire in Western Australia's South West region.

A watch and act alert is in place for people in the western part of Ferguson, with residents warned to leave or get ready to actively defend their properties.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the bushfire is moving fast and some roads may be closed to motorists, who are asked to avoid the area.
