Greyhound racing will be no more in New South Wales by the middle of next year.
State premier Mike Baird has announced the dramatic step, in the wake of an inquiry by former Australian high court judge Michael McHugh.
The findings include mass killing of greyhounds, the use of live baiting and deception of the public.
The sport's state body said today is an extremely sad day for the industry and those in it.
Baird said the findings are damning, and it's a decision that's had to be made.
"The report he has produced is chilling, confronting, it's horrific."
"There's an industry that condones users live baiting as part of its practices. The culture, the cover ups - it is not something in any way we can support going forward."
The ban will be effective from July 1st next year.
It's not clear if other Australian states, or New Zealand will follow suit.
Greyhound Racing New South Wales has suspended all racing for the next seven days following the state government's decision.
