Theresa May vows to contest leadership challenge

Theresa May has said she will contest a no-confidence vote with "everything I've got".

The 1922 Committee has received the minimum 48 letters from Conservative MPs calling for a vote of no confidence in May.

The UK Prime Minister could lose her role if enough MPs vote against her.

However, in a statement outside No. 10, she told reporters that she vows to contest the vote.

She says a change in leadership now would put the country at risk.

May says a leadership challenge would not happen in time to ensure that Brexit happens by the end of March, which could hand the negotiations over to the Opposition.

"None of that would be in the national interest."

A ballot will be held Wednesday evening local time (between 7 and 9am for New Zealand)

May will need the backing of 158 MPs to survive, but could decide to resign if votes in support aren't significant enough.

If she does secure enough votes, her position will be secure for at least 12 months.

May has come under fire in recent weeks over her handling of the Brexit negotiations.

Earlier this week, she postponed a vote on the leave deal with the European Union, in the face of likely defeat in the UK parliament.
